Don't Be Like Mickey And Attempt To Do It All Yourself

Mops and Brooms and Water Oh My! (How to Call For Professional Cleanup)

When you were a kid, did you love Mickey Mouse? I did. One of my all time favorite stories is that of the Sorcerers Apprentice. In this Walt Disney classic version, a sorcerer takes Mickey Mouse on as an apprentice. He teaches him a few magic spells. At one point in the story, the Sorcerer tells Mickey to clean up, but not to use magic, for fear that it will make things worse. After the sorcerer leaves, Mickey gets annoyed that he has to clean up by himself. He decides that he is going to use a magic spell to make the brooms and mops do the work for him. He falls asleep and things get out of hand. Water starts to fill up the dish sinks and spills onto the floor. Mickey wakes to find the furniture floating away- and himself! He calls out to the sorcerer for help and the sorcerer immediately fixes the problem.

Similar to Mickey, we all find ourselves in sticky situations. It seems that no matter the problem, we want to fix it ourselves! This is true when we hit hard situations like flood damage. This type of event seems to come out when we least expect it- like Mickey when he fell asleep. It almost seems like magic- one minute you are enjoying a lovely evening listening to a beautiful storm- and the next, you are panicking when you find out that your basement has flooded.

My advice to you would be to not be like Mickey and attempt to do it ALL yourself. Here is why: standing water can be dangerous to not only you and your family, but it can ruin the structure of your home as well. However, there are a few things you can do while you wait for help to come.

Flood Damage in Layton : What To Do While You Wait

  1. Start by opening doors and windows to let fresh air run through.
  2. Disconnect the power, unplug any electronics, and remove electronics, furniture, and movable items immediately.
  3. Get rid of the water that you can. Use old towels and other items to get rid of the water.
  4. Dispose of any items that may have been damaged. It will be extremely tempting to throw everything away into a dumpster- especially when you are already upset about the damage that the water has caused- but it is important to organize the damaged items into piles and recycle what you can. This will help alleviate the pressure on your local landfill, and will be safer for you and your family.

It is important that you call professionals- like Mickey did with the sorcerer. There are professionals all over the Layton, Utah area- especially those at Swift Restoration and Remodeling. Our flood damage restoration technicians are like the sorcerer- they have had tons of practice and experience when it comes to the cleanup of flood damage. Even though you will be able to help out a little bit, it is vital that they come and do the heavy lifting. Because of their experience, they will have the correct equipment and tools needed to complete the cleaning process.
