The ideal range for water pressure in a home falls between 40 and 45 psi. Too low and your water output will be frustratingly slow. Too high, however, and the pressure in your pipes can actually cause them to wear down over time. Make sure you reach out to a plumber immediately if the water pressure in your home inexplicably drops or rises.

Lots of gunk and other debris will accumulate in your pipes over time. This accumulation of gunk within your pipes will gradually wear away at them. To prevent this from happening you should have your drains cleaned at least once a year. This will increase the longevity of your pipes and likely save you money in the long run. 

This is just good sense but avoid flushing anything down your toilet that isn’t supposed to go down it. That means what goes down your toilet should pretty much just be left to toilet paper. Anything else simply isn’t worth the risk of causing your pipes to clog. 

Just as chemical drain cleaners are designed to break down the materials causing your pipes to clog, they can also wear down your pipes over time. A much better approach is to use a drain snake which will effectively remove any blockages in your drains without the use of any harmful chemicals.

Everything discussed above has one primary goal of decreasing the amount of pressure on your pipes. When your drains start to slow down that is a sign of a blockage somewhere in your pipe system. Increased pressure and damage is almost always a result of blockages. The more pressure builds up inside your pipes, the harder they have to work and the faster they wear down. Don’t wait to have the issue looked at if you ever notice your water draining slowly. Try plunging or snaking the drain right away. If that doesn’t work, call a pro. Whatever you do, don’t leave a slow drain alone. The problem won’t go away and  will  get worse–and hurt your pipes in the meantime.
